Trad Climbing

The Trad Climbing school covers the basics of lead climbing using climbing gear for protection. Most popular climbing areas do not have easy access to the tops of climbs for setting up climbing anchors. Clipping into anchors on the cliff face as you climb is known as "lead climbing." A variation of lead climbing where the climber sets anchors in the cliff face for protection against a fall as he/she climbs is known as traditional, or "trad," climbing. This course introduces the lead climbing process through mock leading and practicing placing protection and building anchors. The first half of the class will cover anchors and protection placement as it applies to trad climbing. The second half will focus on teaching the fundamentals of belaying and seconding a trad climber. You must have completed the Climbing Beginner School and the Climbing Anchors School and should be able to top rope 5.7 climbs to take this class.

The Advanced Climbing school consists of one classroom session and one all-day trip. You must attend the classroom session to be able to attend the trip. Please note that trips tend to begin at 7 am and often don't return until 10 pm. Participants are often required to carpool.
